Buakaw Banchamek

From Surin to Bangkok

Buakaw grew up in Surin province in northeastern Thailand and began Muay Thai as a child, like many young fighters in the region. He trained at the Por. Pramuk gym and built a strong record in Thailand's stadiums, known for conditioning and tireless pressure.

K-1 World MAX

Buakaw became famous worldwide in K-1's World MAX tournament, which gathered the best middleweight kickboxers. He won it in 2004 and again in 2006, beating opponents from Europe and Japan under kickboxing rules that limited clinching. His success showed Muay Thai's effectiveness on the international stage.

A new name

After leaving his long-time gym in 2012, he changed his ring name to Buakaw Banchamek. He continued to fight in big events in Thailand and abroad, became a television personality and helped promote Muay Thai and Thai culture around the world.

Did you know?

Buakaw's name means white lotus in Thai. He has fought in major events across Thailand, Japan, Europe and China, and he became one of the most recognisable Thai athletes worldwide. Many fans first discovered Muay Thai through highlights of his K-1 fights, where his clinch knees and kicks overwhelmed taller opponents. He also appeared in films and advertising, helping turn Muay Thai into a global fitness and lifestyle brand.

Visitors to Thailand can watch live Muay Thai at Rajadamnern or Lumpinee stadium in Bangkok or at local stadiums in tourist areas, with cards running on most nights of the week.

Style and legacy

Buakaw's left kick, powerful knees and calm, steady pressure are studied by fighters everywhere. His popularity helped Muay Thai gyms open across Europe, the Americas and Asia, and made the sport a favourite for fitness and competition alike.
